Urban survival clothing – Are you prepared for disaster?

Urban Survival Clothing

You may have taken survival training

These are good courses to learn from except for one vital detail.

Most, if not all, survivalist courses teach you what to do in the wilderness.

They do not teach you what you need to know in order to survive in an urban setting.

There is a vast difference between the two environments and this one is lacking in water filled with fish or land filled with wild animals.

Plus, you may have a hard time putting a tent peg into concrete.

The Reality of Survival

When disaster strikes, most people think about getting food and water the quickest.

But those two items are not as important as finding and wearing the right clothing.

Humans can survive up to 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food, but unfortunately, without the right clothing, you could die within 3 hours.

You will need to pick the right clothing depending on which area of the country you live in.

Plus, you need to find the right urban survival clothing for the season that the region is in at the moment.

Knowing the weather will help you pick the right clothing.

types of weather

It does not do you any good to get 5 gallons of water or 10 pounds of food items if you are going to catch pneumonia once you get those items home.

Don’t count on anybody helping you as they are in survival mode as well.

You need to plan in advance and get the right clothing ready in your bug-out bag or other storage areas to keep yourself alive.

When you live in a cold region of the country, you know that you will need good boots, as well as socks, to protect your feet.

Good shoes if you don’t.

Answer 3 Questions to Pick the Right Urban Survival Clothing

These three questions apply no matter where you live in the country.

It is important to answer them honestly so that you can buy and store the right clothing options when you need them in a hurry.

#1. What is the weather like currently and what weather changes can you expect?

The answer depends on your living area.

You will need bug or insect protection if you live in a very humid area.

Or waterproof clothes if you live in the Northwest.

#2. What activity will you be doing?

This refers to the type of transportation you may or may not have.

If you are walking, wearing moisture-wicking clothing is important.

Or if you are in the city, you do not want to attract attention so mute those colors.

hiking boots

Plus, you may need a good pair of sneakers or hiking boots.

#3. What hazardous conditions will you be facing?

If there is a fire nearby and it is out of control, you may need a mask to help you breathe.

Or you may need gloves to help you remove rubble in your way.

hazard

One thing is for sure, you will need protective clothing items to make sure your body is safe from some injury possibilities.

One Word of Warning

If you are prepared for an upcoming disaster, do not tell anyone.

There are those low-level personalities that will do whatever needs to be done to survive and who will not care about you.

They will just care about getting what you have.

So make sure you do not advertise your preparedness if you want to stay safe.

Learn from past disasters what people can and will do to get the right supplies and clothing to protect them from the elements.

Critical Supplies

Keep in mind, most of the people you encounter, will not be prepared for a disaster.

Advertising your preparedness only makes you vulnerable to whatever crosses those people’s minds.

Make sure your storage bag or containers do not attract attention through vivid colors, logos, and so on.

How to Create a Disaster Safe Binder

You want as few people to know about your stash as possible.

This does include survival clothing, as many people will not think about that aspect of survival until it is too late to do anything about it honestly.

This is no time to be making a fashion statement.

The Types of Urban Survival Clothing Items You will Need

There will be two types of clothing options you need to prepare depending on where you live.

If you are in those warm regions of the country that never gets cold in the daytime, it will get cold at night.

So prepare both types of clothing to be on the safe side. You do this for each member of your family.

#1. Cold weather clothing

In this situation, you want to think of layers.

Instead of opting for thick and insulated clothing items, you should be looking at thinner, more breathable clothing that wicks the moisture away from your body.

Plus, in case it snows or rains, you will need good waterproof outerwear.

Getting chilled to the bone will defeat your survival actions.

Here are some specific clothing options:

  • Long-sleeved shirt- this will keep your arms nice and warm
  • Fleece or sweater- you need layers to stay warm so pick a good one.
  • Good jeans or thicker pants- you want them durable and able to keep the cold away from your legs
  • Long johns- this is an extra layer that will help keep you nice and warm when you are outside
  • Waterproof jacket- make sure it has deep pockets to put your hands inside.
  • Gloves & a hat- you want to protect your hands and your head when the cold weather sets in
  • Winter Boots & socks- keeping your feet warm and protected allows you to move better and safely

If you do not need any of these items, you can store them safely in a bug-out bag.

They may come in handy at night in those warm regions of the country.

#2. Warm weather clothing

You won’t need as many clothing items when you are in the middle of spring or summer and sometimes early fall.

Pair of jeans

While the temperatures drop, the worst you should prepare for is rain.

  • Long-sleeve shirt- or you can go with a short sleeve one. The long sleeve may be cooler and it provides you protection from the sun’s rays.
  • Jeans or long pants- make sure they are durable and protective. You do not want shorts for the same reason you do not want short sleeve shirts. You will need to protect your legs from sunburn
  • Sunglasses- you never know when it is going to get too bright or you walk into some glare. A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes and give you some protection against flying dirt and debris.
  • Boots and socks- or a very good pair of sneakers. Pavement can get very hot so protect your feet from the heat by having nice moisture-wicking socks on and good boots or shoes over them.

You may also need a windbreaker or a raincoat to protect you from the elements when the sun goes down or there is a storm.

A hat would work to protect your head from the sun and keep you from overheating.

T-shirts may be okay but they are usually very thin and offer little protection from the elements.

Other Survival Clothing Options & Colors

Another thing to remember is that the previous clothing items and the ones coming up can only do so much.

It is best to find good shelter as soon as possible.

That way you can hide your clothing items and make plans of when and where you will go out.

To do urban survival right, you need to have a combination of proper clothing as well as good shelter.

Then, the colors your clothing should have will be darker ones like black, navy blue, dark brown, dark green, and similar colors.

dark color clothes

Stay away from bright-colored clothing or anything that attracts attention to you and your location.

As for additional clothing items, the following is optional, and just pick the ones you think you will need:

  • Waterproof poncho
  • Cargo pants- with lots of pockets
  • Hats that go over your ears and can be tied up when not needed
  • Bandanas to wipe sweat, protect your head, and so on
  • Scarf- to protect your face and neck
  • Ski mask- to keep your face warm
  • Boot gaiters- as an extra layer against the rain or snow
  • Dust mask- for protection for your lungs. Fires can raise a lot of dust as can the wind.

Some Final Words

Be like the Boy Scouts.

Always be prepared for when a disaster will strike.

Urban Survival Essentials

One way to be prepared is to have a bug-out bag dedicated to storing all the right clothing items you will need.

Make sure to prepare for warm days and cool to cold nights.

You can always get food and water but you can’t always get the right clothing when disaster hits your area.

Then when you get those clothing items, make sure the colors are muted or dark.

Attracting attention in a disaster is not always a good idea.

So, now you have a little more knowledge on urban survival clothing.

Time to get prepared!
