Off Grid Coffee Brewing: Coffee is a must-have beverage

Many people just cannot start their day without tasting that freshly brewed cup of coffee.

It is a good way to start your day as coffee tastes great to most people. It also smells wonderful as well.

Plus coffee is easy to make… when you have power and a machine that does it all for you.

How do you get that great pick me up when the power is out or you are off-grid?

Coffee Brewing

Using the following of-grid methods of brewing coffee may take a little more time and personal involvement but you will still be able to have a great cup of coffee every morning.

Back to the Basics

In the old days before modern technology upgraded coffee machines and coffee making, people brewed their coffee the old-fashioned way.

They used heat and a non-electric coffee maker or pot.

They only needed 2 ingredients- water and coffee.

The latter ingredient comes pre-ground or in whole beans.

coffee beans

If you did not buy pre-ground coffee, that means you have to grind the whole beans yourself.

Since you are off-grid, you will have to have a non-electric coffee bean grinder with you.

These are not hard to find or use.

You just put the whole beans in the grinding compartment and then turn the handle.

If you bought the right model, you should be able to adjust the grinding level to get the type of ground coffee you prefer.

Then to make your coffee, you need to add water. If it is clean and potable water, you can get your water from just about anywhere.

In the old days, they just scooped the water out of the creek, stream, or river (those were pre-pollution days).

Once you have those two ingredients, all you need is the heat.

A good campfire was good enough for cowboys and it still works today.

The campfire will not take long to heat up the coffee and you will have a cup shortly.

Since you are off-grid your heat sources may be limited.

Off-Grid Coffee Brewing Methods

The keyword here is ‘off-grid’.

off grid

That means you will not be using an electric stove, microwave, or electric coffee maker or machine.

Nor will you be using a gas stove hooked up to a gas line.

For the heat portion of these methods, you will be limited to portable camp stoves, solar-powered stoves, or a campfire.

All are good options to use with the campfire probably being the fastest and hottest heat source

With that in mind, here are some methods to make your coffee off-grid:

#1. French Press

One of the simpler methods to use.

All you have to do is remove the press and pour in your coffee grounds and hot water.

Then put the press back in place and after some brewing time, this is up to you and how strong you want your coffee, you press down.

French Press

The press will contain the coffee grounds while the hot coffee moves above the press. Your coffee should be ground-free once you are done.

When you are done, you simply pour the coffee into your cup.

That is the easy part.

The hard part will be buying a French Press coffee maker that is not fragile and will fit in your knapsack or other bags.

There are a variety of designs available and you should be able to find the perfect option for your coffee-making needs and situation.

When you use this method, getting your morning cup of coffee is quick

#2. Cowboy coffee

Life in the old west was not sophisticated especially when you were on a round-up.

Coffee was made very simply and over a nice campfire.

Once you built your fire and placed some sticks over the flame to hold the coffee pot, you added the ingredients and started the fire.

All you do with this method is put the coffee grounds in the pot and then pour the water over those grounds.

This was all done by eye and taste.

There were no measuring cups on a cowboy’s campsite.

Once the ingredients are in, you bring the coffee to a boil, as if you have much choice, and when you think it is ready you take the coffee pot off the fire.

Wait a few minutes for the grounds to settle and then pour the coffee into your cup.

If any grounds do get into the coffee mug, just tap the side and let them fall to the bottom.

Once that is done, drink your coffee.

#3. Drip coffee

This is a good method to use when you do not want to pack a lot of items with you.

All you will need is a few coffee filters, a cup, and a device called the snowpeak.

The snowpeak will hold the filter and coffee grounds for you.

It also folds up so it does not take up a lot of space in your backpack, etc.

While you are heating your water, put your coffee mug on a flat surface and then place the snowpeak over your cup.

Once it is in position place the filter inside so it will stay and not fall through.

Then put in your coffee grounds.

Again, you may have to do this by eye to get the right amount.

Once everything is ready, take the boiling water off the heat source and pour the water into the coffee grounds.

Go slow as the water will need time to drip through the coffee grounds and filter into your cup.

When your cup is full, put the items aside and have a good coffee break.

#4. The Aeropress

This process is similar to the French Press style and it is just as simple.

It may take a little longer to do but that is off-grid life.

Everything takes longer when you are out in nature and have no modern conveniences.

The first step to using this coffee-making device is to start your fire or camp stove. Then place a pot of water bringing it to a boil.

Place your grounds in the tube and then pour in your hot water.

Aeropress

Once your hands are free, take the plunger and press down on the mixture.

You can do some stirring first if you want.

The coffee will go out through the bottom and into your coffee container.

The grounds will stay behind and you will have a smooth-tasting cup of coffee

If a few grounds do make it through, just let them settle to the bottom of your cup and drink away.

Off-grid coffee drinking is not 4 o’clock tea in high society. It will be rough.

#5. Percolator/drip combination

There was a time when coffee-making pots came in 3 sections.

The bottom section held the fresh water, the middle section held the coffee grounds and the top section held the hot water as it came up.

Then through the perforated holes in the bottom of the top two sections, the coffee dripped back into the bottom section.

No electricity was needed for this process.

Percolator

Just heat, coffee grounds and water.

This is a slow method to use as you have to wait for the water to get hot enough to move into the top section.

Then you had to wait till the coffee dripped back down into the bottom section.

But it is simple, and easy to do and the coffee maker served as a coffee serving pot.

You just removed the top two sections and placed the lid on the bottom one.

That is all there is to it.

You can have great-tasting coffee anywhere, anytime with this method.

You just have to be patient for the coffee to go through its process.

Types of Heat Sources

When you go off-grid, you are not limited to making a campfire to have a great cup of coffee.

Heat Sources

It helps as a campfire is quick and it is very hot.

There are different heat sources you can use and some of them are as follows:

  1. Propane camp stove– these use those little 1-pound canisters and have dials to control the flame
  2. Hot water rocket stove- heats up water extremely quickly by using mirrors and a vacuum tube. The mirrors reflect the sun’s rays to heat the water
  3. Rocket stove– you will only need bits of paper, twigs, and other small combustible materials to get the fire going. A little does a lot and these come in different designs

Off Grid Coffee Brewing – Some Final Words

Making coffee off-grid is not complicated.

You just need to use the heat source of your choice and have fresh water handy.

All the methods described above are simple and easy to use.

It just takes a little practice to master the methods.

Since this is the modern age, you can use filters with the cowboy method if you want.

No sense in letting coffee grounds spoil your morning wake-up cup of coffee.

Pick the one that suits your lifestyle the best as well as gives you the best coffee flavor possible
