Plant Survival Basics

Plants can provide for a large array of needs. They are found in the wilderness, where they are most commonly abundant, in the desert, on islands and isles and etc. Their uses range from food to medicine to even water.

As with that, assuming, you would be at a huge disadvantage if you did not know how to exploit the plant-life around you in a survival situation. Furthermore, what if you did try to exploit them but your knowledge and experience on plants were sub-par. What would happen then? Well, we do have to remember that not all plants are safe to consume and perhaps even touch – some you can eat, some you can also get poison from. These are all the reasons why we are going to teach you some plant survival basics.

Plant Survival Basics: Food

Food is a huge part of survival. Going on days without food is highly not suggested. While you have animals as sources of food, you probably have a much bigger source waiting for you to gather in the flora. Just don’t eat the wrong plant.

Plants can be highly abundant, easy to gather and with better selection – food that which is healthy and nutritious.

What plants to eat and not eat will for the most part rely on knowledge you already have beforehand. But such techniques as the Universal Edibility Test can also help us in better determining which plants are edible.

Plant Survival Basics: Medicine

Lots of the plants out there have much medicinal value. Again, we should properly identify the plants we find before attempting to utilize them for our purposes. With plants, we can help treat or fight against illnesses; help treat wounds; help stop bleeding; cure certain sicknesses…etc.

Plant Survival Basics:  Water

It is possible to extract and drink the water and or liquids contained in many plants; mostly inside of vines, trees and fruits. You can purpose some plants also as containers for water and other liquids – for example: the bamboo stem. You also have sponges in mosses to soak up dew .

Plant Survival Basics: Others

Kindle, tinder and fuel for fires you can procure from weeds, grass, smaller plants, trees…etc.

Plants can provide for building and other purpose raw materials – even for weapons – we’re mostly referring here to wood. Insulation you can make through the fluffing up of milkweed or female cattail heads down. This insulation you can purpose for bedding inside and covering your shelter outside.

That poison can even help you to poison fish and potentially other lifeforms.

Plants can also help in concealing yourself as such with the dyes you can make.

You can make fibers and cordage material from plant fibers. These you can get from the stems of nettles and milkweeds, the yucca plants, and the barks which are inner of trees like linden.

Insect repellents through the placing of sassafras leaves and or even smudging or burning of cattail seed hair fibers perhaps also.

Remember to always positively identify the plants you plan to use be it for any purpose for your own safety.
