Today, we’re going to take a look at what the letter S of the acronym, SURVIVAL, means – Sizing up the situation: Survival Basics.

Try to find the underlying pattern to the environment – feeling all that surrounds you. Moreover that, all environments have a rhythmic pattern to them; be it forest or jungle. Each movement and sound by animals, people or even nature is your tempo to discern.

Sizing up the situation: Survival Basics – Physique

Always second check on any injuries or wounds. As you might ignore any when in a hardened state. Do whatever necessary first-aid procedures to treat yourself. In short, always take care of your body’s state and or health. For your needs, you must procure and secure these in order to keep on going.

Sizing up the situation: Survival Basics – Equipment

Always second check on your gear. You might’ve lost some on the way. Perhaps also, some  equipment might’ve gotten damaged and you just weren’t able to notice it at first glance.

Sizing up the situation: Survival Basics – Combat

If placed in a combat scenario, one must try to find somewhere to conceal themselves. Your security is key. Also be actively alert on whether or not enemies are out to attack, in to defend or otherwise retreat. Using your senses to survey the environment is crucial for navigating through the thick of a threat.

U – Use all your senses, undue haste makes waste – Then think before you do something.

R – Remember where you are – Then always have a sense of where you are and where you’re going.

V – Vanquish fear and panic – Then be in the correct mental state and possess the correct attitude.

I – Improvise – Make due of the situation.

V – Value living – Never stop having the will to survive.

A – Act like the natives – Think how natives would adapt to this land.

L – Learn Basic Skills – These basic skills to learn and apply are at the heart of survival.
